Jones Pyatt Law, LLC is a law firm focused on tax and real estate services throughout the United States. The firm was established in July 2015 by Paul Jones. As of February 1, 2021, April Sparks Pyatt joined the firm as a partner and chair of real estate services. Prior to joining the firm, April was a partner at Ice Miller LLP. Paul is a partner and chair of the firm’s tax services practice. Paul is a tax attorney with 20 years’ experience representing clients in real estate tax appeals, exemptions, and incentives in the Midwest. For more than two decades, April has provided legal counsel to clients in commercial real estate matters in Indiana and throughout the United States.

The firm is comprised of a full-service team of experienced and trusted professionals with broad experience in tax matters, valuation, real estate transactions, and related areas. The firm’s clients are based across the United States and range from Fortune 500 companies to small business owners. Real Estate Tax Appeals, Negotiation & Litigation

One of our firm’s primary practice areas is representing clients in real estate tax appeals negotiation and litigation in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. Our attorneys are licensed to practice law in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, and we have a network of property tax consultants and attorneys to assist clients with appeals in other states on a national basis.

Real Estate Tax Estimates & Analysis

Our firm provides real estate tax estimate letters and analysis to our clients when they are developing, acquiring, or selling properties.

Real Estate Tax Exemptions

Our firm routinely represents nonprofit organizations, including public charities, private foundations, and other tax-exempt entities in the property tax exemption application process.

Personal Property Tax Audits

Our firm represents and advises clients in connection with personal property tax audits, litigation, and assessments.

Real and Personal Property Tax Abatements and Deductions

Tax Sale Litigation and Resolution

Our firm represents clients in resolving tax sale issues and having properties removed from tax sale. This scope of work includes both settlement negotiations with the county officials as well as litigation in the local courts, when required.

Nonprofits and Exempt Organization

In addition to real estate tax exemptions, our firm provides advice and representation to nonprofits concerning federal tax exemption, corporate governance, and contractual agreements. We serve as outside general counsel to several charities and foundations.

New Markets Tax Credits

Our firm represents clients in obtaining a wide range of tax credits and incentives, including New Markets Tax Credits (NMTCs). The NMTC program provides tax credit equity financing primarily for real estate projects located in qualified low-income census tracts.

Opportunity Zones

We represent investors and developers in all aspects of the Opportunity Zone program, which provides investors in qualified opportunity funds with tax benefits for investing in qualified opportunity zone businesses.

Local Counsel Opinions and Advice

We provide local counsel (borrower’s counsel) representation to clients when needed, including review and negotiation of transaction documents as well as legal opinions.

Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits

We are experienced with assisting clients in obtaining historic tax credit incentives and historic preservation initiatives, including the use of Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits (HRTCs).

State Tax Credits

We represent new and fast-growing businesses and assist them in obtaining various state business incentives and grants, including workforce training grants, employee expansion tax credits, business investment tax credits, among others.

Low-Income Housing Tax Credits

We represent clients in all aspects of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, including entity formation, LIHTC applications and QAP review, deal and tax structuring, financial review, syndication, re-financing, re-syndication, partnership agreement review, and exit transactions.
